Has your morning meal been feeling a little “bleak” lately?

If you feel stuck in a rut with your breakfast choices, try looking to other countries for inspiration.

Many international breakfasts can help you incorporate more fiber, sugar and better processed carbohydrates throughout the day.

Here are some options from around the world.

Mexico

In part of the Yucatan region, one of the traditional breakfast options includes huevos motuleños.

This is a tostada (fried corn tortilla) with refried black beans, fried egg, spiced tomato sauce, peas, ham and topped with fresh cheese. Served with fried bananas on the side.

Try it for a different twist on your morning eggs.

They can be made healthier by toasting tortillas instead of frying, choosing vegetarian or lean beans, and frying plantains in olive oil.

Colombia

A little further south in Colombia, you can enjoy a breakfast soup called changua.

It is a water and milk based soup with potatoes and topped with coriander and spring onions. The eggs are then cooked into the hot soup base and served with hearty bread on the side.

Changua is a great warm food on a cold morning.

Egypt

Traveling across the Atlantic to Egypt, we find a traditional breakfast dish that dates back to ancient times.

Foul medames is a national Egyptian dish made into a soup with fava beans, olive oil, and spices such as parsley, garlic, onion, chili powder, cumin, and lemon.

Serve with warm pita bread for a fiber-rich breakfast.

The Middle East

Moving to the east, a common traditional group breakfast, called shakshuka.

Boiled egg dish with tomato sauce and sweet pepper. They are often seasoned with warm spices such as cumin, coriander, paprika, or crushed red pepper flakes.

Garnish with some fresh herbs and feta cheese. This can even make an enjoyable family lunch or dinner.

Japan

Heading to Asia, we find morning dishes unique to the islands of Japan.

Japanese families traditionally begin their day with a meal that to many Americans might look more like dinner.

Centered around rice, breakfast includes miso soup, grilled salmon, kelp, natto, and pickled vegetables.
