A Jennings man has been charged with kidnapping an Uber driver at gunpoint

Clayton, Missouri — A Jennings man is in jail for allegedly kidnapping an Uber driver at gunpoint earlier this month.

According to a report filed by the Florissant Police Department, the crime occurred on June 7.

Police claim that Dejohn Colbert, 18, and one other person, ordered a ride through the Uber app.

When an Uber driver arrived in a Volkswagen Tiguan, the two men got into the car and put a gun to the driver’s neck. They took the victim’s cell phone, car keys, and wallet. They drive off in the Tiguan, leaving the driver behind.

The suspects eventually crashed the Tiguan at New Hall’s Ferry Road and Thoroughbred Lane during a police chase. The two men attempted to flee on foot, but were caught. Police claim that Colbert was in possession of a . 380-caliber firearm at the time of his arrest.

The St. Louis County District Attorney’s Office has charged Colbert with vehicle hijacking – a dangerous weapon/deadly instrument and an armed criminal act. He remains in custody at the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $200,000 cash bond only.

If convicted of hijacking, Colbert faces anywhere from 10 to 30 years in state prison, or life in prison. He faces an additional sentence of 3 to 15 years for armed criminal acts, which will be served in consecutive terms with other sentences.
